Sustainability

IN BRIEF

Why is prima corrugated board sustainable?

Recycled

Corrugated board is a recycled product. It consists of an average of 80% waste paper, our most important raw material. Corrugated board has a recycling rate of 95%.

Natural

The raw materials for corrugated cardboard originate from nature and are also broken down again by nature if something should go wrong.

Regrowing

We are FSC®-certified. For the virgin fibres in the corrugated base paper, we mainly use broken and thinned wood from forest management.

Reduced emissions

We purchase 100% renewable green electricity and green gas with 100% CO₂ compensation. This corresponds to 95% of the energy used for our production.

Social

Our corrugated cardboard is manufactured in Germany under fair working conditions. We have a high training quota.

Family-run

Family-run since our foundation 75 years ago – always with the next generation in mind.

EMISSION REDUCED

Our production is 95% climate neutral

In order to produce corrugated cardboard and corrugated cardboard packaging, we need energy. Heat is used to mould the corrugated base paper into the corrugated shape that makes corrugated cardboard so stable. Printing, die-cutting and gluing also require energy. Since April 2023, we have been sourcing electricity from 100% renewable sources (European hydropower) and, since the beginning of 2024, gas with 100% CO₂ compensation via international climate protection projects. Together, this amounts to 95% of the energy used in our production. What remains is the energy used for our internal transport and heating – but here, too, we are working every day on possible solutions to avoid greenhouse gas emissions. Our certified energy management system helps us to reduce our energy consumption. To this end, many different departments work together to make us a little more efficient every year.

REYCLED

Corrugated board cycle

Our packaging is characterized by sustainability: The corrugated cardboard is made from wood fibers, cellulose and waste paper, which means it is obtained from renewable, environmentally friendly raw materials. Used packaging is returned to the waste paper cycle and recycled. The wood used for production comes from certified, exemplary forestry (FSC®). The CO₂ absorbed by trees during their life cycle remains bound in the cardboard and waste paper. To conserve resources, we rely on clever packaging solutions, lean production processes and short supply chains. We will be happy to advise you on environmentally friendly packaging made from sustainable raw materials and are available to you as a contact partner.

You want to pack in an environmentally friendly and natural way? Then using corrugated board is a good choice, as it is not only made from natural raw materials, but also comes from broken and thinned wood from managed forests.

As everything at prima revolves around sustainability, we naturally source our raw materials from well-managed forests and are also FSC®-certified.

What is sustainability?

The term ‘sustainable’ was first used in the forestry industry – the very place where the (waste) paper for our corrugated cardboard originated. As early as 1346, one could read in a commandment of the French King Philippe VI that forests may only be logged in such a way that they remain in a permanently good condition. In Germany, Hans Carl von Carlowitz wrote in 1713: ‘Cut only as much wood as the forest can bear!’ Today, sustainability is about more than wood. We must not consume more resources than our planet can regenerate. Moreover, sustainable development is not just about ecological aspects. It also includes social and economic sustainability. For companies, for example, this means taking care of employees, neighbours and people in the region.
